The Run Jump Throw Program has now concluded at school. The aim of the program was to promote the fundamental skills of running, jumping and throwing and for everyone to be involved, as these important skills are part of most sports. It is important for these skills to be developed at an early age as it can set children up for success later in life. There are two Invercargill-based athletics clubs that teach these skills. For those interested in developing these skills the club season has just started, but new members (ages 5+) are welcome at any time. The season extends through to April 2012 with competitions on average every 2nd Sunday. All of this provides the perfect opportunity for extra practice for school based athletics (including zone and Southland Champs). It is a low cost and enjoyable sport and details for the clubs including training nights are as follows:

St Pauls Athletics Club – Tues 5.45pm (all) and Thursday 5.45pm (10+ extra training night) at Surrey Park. Contact Lilian 213 0104, hjtudor@clear.net.nz ) or Barbara

(216 8574, barbaraj@value.net.nz ).

Invercargill Athletics Club – Wed 6pm (all) at Surrey Park. Contact Tony 027 2528800 or t0nyk@xtra.co.nz - note the 0 not o in the email address).

Dear Parents

A big thank you to Miss O’Neill, Fr. Vince, Fr. Jacob and all the parents and children who took part in the First Communion Mass on Sunday. A special thanks to the parents who organised the afternoon tea – it was much appreciated.

If you have photos from Sunday, we would be most grateful if you could send them onto us at office@shsinv.school.nz, as we would like to send one to The Tablet magazine.

Last night was very busy with a photo exhibition and two camp meetings in Room 9.

A lot of work has gone into these and we appreciate your support in celebrating with your children.

Good luck to: Sam Richardson, Aidan Hosie, Annie Armstrong, Hunter Cairns, Tyler McLeod, Zane Flawn, Sionelle Cahill, Megan Sullivan and Scarlett Meikle who are part of the Seals Flipper-ball team who are in the B Grade final tomorrow 4.05 pm at Splash Palace. Mrs Hosie (coach) is proud of them, as they have improved throughout the year and only lost 2 games drawn 1 and won the rest.

Class Happenings – Room 2

It is hard to believe that the term is over half way through already! We have had Mr P. in our room for 3 weeks, he is a student teacher from college. While he was here we learnt more about healthy bodies – it is super important to wash our hands to keep the germs off them. Germs can get in through our mouth, so it is important to keep our hands clean so that we don't transfer the germs onto our food, pencils or toys.

We used glitter to represent germs and put them on our hands with some lotion. We then tried to take the 'germs' off by using a paper towel, using cold water and also using warm water. We found that the warm water and soap was best to get the germs off. We could see the glitter/germs in the warm water. The paper towels just spread them around!

Reports

National Standards – Yr 1 – 3 Report

6, 7, 8

year olds

Below

At

Above

There will be a table such as this relating to mathematics, writing and reading.

The standards refer to birthdays 6yr, 7yr & 8yr, not at the end of the year as in the case for children in Yr 4 – 6.

This means if your child’s 7th birthday was prior to October, we will be assessing them against the standard for an 8yr old in this report.

The language used in the table will be as follows:

Is below the standard, Is at the standard.

Is at risk of not reaching the standard, Is above the standard, Is on target to reach the standard.

If there is interest, I intend to hold some after school meetings to explain the changes.

These will start on Wednesday 23rd & Thursday 24th November at 2.30 pm in the library, for parents coming to collect their children. The meeting should take no longer than 10 – 15 minutes. Please contact Christine or put your name on the list in the corridor.

End of Year Mass

The End of Year Mass will be held on Tuesday 13th December at 1.30pm.

Class Happenings – Room 3

It has been a busy couple of weeks in Room 3. We have been lucky to have Miss Lynch join us for the last three weeks. Sadly she is leaving us at the end of the week. We wish her lots of success in her career as a teacher. Yesterday we had a visit from Pokey, the red-eared slider turtle, 4 New Holland blue chicks and a baby quail. These are the pets of Zane. The chicks and quail made lots of noise as they were passed around the class. We had to handle them carefully so that we did not hurt them. They are fed something called mash and live under a heat lamp to keep them warm. Pokey hurt Zane by biting him. Photos will be posted on our blog soon. A big thank you to Zane’s mum who brought the animals to our class.
