FAITH  FACT FOR WEEK 7

What is holiness?

Holiness is being holy. Strictly speaking only God is holy.
God’s holiness is acknowledged in the worship of the Church in prayers such as the Holy, holy, holy which we pray at Mass. Traditionally
certain people, places and things are regarded as holy because of their
relationship with God. All Christians are called to holiness in the way they
live their lives. The Saints, such as St Patrick and St Joseph whose feasts
we celebrate this week are models of holiness for us.  Examples of qualities
or expressions of holiness are love, courage, faithfulness, truth and respect.

Dear Parents

There will be great excitement for Catholics worldwide and especially in South America today with the announcement that the Argentinian Cardinal Jorge Marco Bergoglio has been elected as the new Pope, with the name Francis I. He is the first South American and also the first Jesuit Pope. It will be interesting to see in the months ahead how he deals with a lot of the issues confronting the Catholic church today.

Congratulations to the new members of the PTA and especially the office bearers. The staff and I look forward to having a close association with you.
I wish to make special mention of Susanne Brown, Trish Sherriff and Denise Sullivan who are standing down as office bearers. Special mention to Susanne who has done an amazing job during her tenure as president. Under your leadership the committee has worked tirelessly to provide extra equipment and resources for our children, as well as providing a vital link between parents and the school. We thank you for this.

It has been another busy week with swimming and the Rooms 1 – 6 trips to Queen’s Park and the museum. A big thanks to the parents who have been able to help on those days.

Attendance Dues
By now most of you will have received your Attendance Dues invoices from Dunedin. We have been in contact with the Dunedin office this morning and a glitch has occurred with some of the invoices. Even though the descriptions may be wrong, the final balance does add up correctly.
A ‘Catholic Character Donation’ has also been added to these accounts, which please note, are only a donation and are not compulsory. Any parents with enquiries regarding these accounts, are asked to either see me, Christine or Fr Vince.

School Interviews – Monday 8th / Tuesday 9th April
OSCAR is available from 12.30pm on Monday 8th April.
Please see staff in the hall to book your child or phone 218-9520.

Junior Sports Day – Friday 15 March 2013 at 1.30pm
We will review the timing of this event depending on the weather.  If it looks like it might rain we will run the sports earlier in the day.  We will make this decision tomorrow morning and put a notice on our Facebook page if there is a change to the time.  Thank you for your support with this as we do not wish the children to miss out on this fun event.

Curtains ~ We are looking for someone to shorten curtains for us. If you are a sewer and can help, please contact the office.  Thank you.

The Year 4 children were given Dictionaries, kindly donated by Invercargill Rotary.

PTA
Thanks to all those who attended the AGM this week. The new office bearers for the committee this year are:               President                                   Amanda Smith
Vice President                         Maria O’Donnell
Treasurer                                 Donna Holland
Secretary                                  Delwynne Hickey

I’d also like to add a personal thanks to all those who have supported me as President in recent years, and who have been part of the PTA with me over the past 11-12 years. I have met some amazing people and have made many lifelong friends through the PTA during these years.
As it’s my last year with a child at Sacred Heart it will be nice to hand over the reigns, but still be part of the committee for this final year.

Car Trial – Sunday 24th March
This is a fun event which from past experience the kids will really enjoy and the adults will get the chance to meet and relax in the company of other school families throughout the day.
Registrations start from 2.45pm, first car away starts at 3.00pm – it is likely to take somewhere between an hour and an hour and a half to complete.
All you need to come prepared with is a Team Name, Pen, Digital Camera or phone with camera – and petrol in your vehicle.
Plus if you’d like to stay and have tea in the hall with other families at the end we will be finished early enough for you to bring either a picnic for your family or purchase fish & chips at the end of the car trial and still be home early in the evening.
There will be spot prizes on the day and the winning team (family) will be announced and presented the trophy at assembly on Monday 25th (we need a bit of time to work it all out).
So fill your car with the kids (or mix them up with other families) and we’ll see you on Sunday 24th.

The next PTA meeting will be Monday 15th April 7.30 in the school staff room.

Class Happenings – Room 9

Tuatara

Hi, I’m Bob the Tuatara. I’m currently living on Stephens Island in the Cook Strait. Did you know that 90% of tuataras live on Stephen’s Island? That’s about 400 tuataras! Imagine living with 399 brothers and sisters.
I was brought here by some of my fellow friends, over in Invercargill. That’s where my oldest brother, Henry lives.
Over in Invercargill they are trying to breed female tuataras, which are a lot smaller than males.
The reason they are trying to breed female tuataras is because females need cold soil. Males need hot soil. Because we’ve been in summer us tuataras have been breeding males instead of females. I, Bob the tuatara, am very unique because my ancestors lived with the dinosaurs, that’s about 2 million years ago, and tuataras only live for about 100 years, so imagine how many greats go in front of grandparents! To protect myself from predators, I can drop off my tail and run away, so the predator thinks I’m the tail, so it goes after that!
Silly predator! In case you were wondering my tail does grow back.
And last but not least, tuataras are not lizards, but they are reptiles. Thank you for spending about a minute of your time just to learn a whole handful of facts about our one and only, tuatara.      By Jake
