Dear Parents

Next week will be a very busy one for the children with the production and end of term. We will be rehearsing at Centrestage all day Wednesday, and performing on the Wednesday and Thursday nights.  School on Thursday morning will be very low key, and you are most welcome to let your child sleep in and bring them late to school that day.

We need help for various jobs on the nights of production.

If any parents are able to help it would be much appreciated (and also a way to see it for free…) Are you able to help with:

• Videoing the performance – we have video cameras, we just need two people per performance.
• Cleaning up after the shows – general clean up in the seating.
• Transport for moving props to and from Centrestage – Wednesday morning and Thursday evening.
• Ushers – we need two people over 18 each night.

Well Done to the children who took part in the Southland Cross Country last week. Special congratulations to Justin McLean (9) and Tylee Fiebig (19) who were placed in the top 20.

Good luck to Max Forde and Jake Meikle who will travel to Dunedin this Saturday to represent Southland in the Otago/Southland Chess Tournment.

Our prayers are with the Kean and Portia Brown families.

Teachers Only Day – 19^th August

There will be a Teachers Only Day on August 19^th to enable all staff to attend a Writing Course. Changes to the way the Ministry funds us for relieving teachers, makes the cost of a school of relievers prohibitive.

Week 9  ~  In the words of Pope Francis...

Crossing the threshold of faith leads us to forgive and to be able to put on a smile; it is drawing near to everyone who lives a marginalized existence and calling him by name, it is caring for the frailties of the weakest and supporting their tottering steps, certain that whatever we do for the least of our brethren we do for Jesus himself (Mt 25:40).

Shoelaces

There are two types of shoelaces that are available to buy, the round ones and the flat lace type.  If you can, please put the flat type in your child's shoes, as the round ones constantly come undone and can really be a pain for the teachers.  A great holiday challenge is for children to learn to tie their own shoelaces!!! Thank you.

Correction to last week’s newsletter

Well done to Matthew Winter who performed ‘The Flash Mob’ at the Sharks Basketball game on Friday night.  He also went on to perform a “Grease” item at the Sting game on Sunday night.

Behind the Scenes of Our School Production

Dancing with Miss Hannah ~ Every Wednesday, when it’s around 12:00pm, we go to the hall and dance our legs off. We all rush to the door to get in our lines like it’s the end of the world. When we get to the hall we all wriggle about until Room 7 comes in, and we start our dance lessons. We rush to our lines and the music starts. “5, 6, 7, 8” And GO! The first line goes, and we all start dancing. We add new parts every time to make it look perfect! My favourite part would DEFINITELY be the dominos! Miss Hannah has got a lot of cool dance moves up her sleeves!  And the awesome thing about it is we still have one more dance to learn! Charlotte

Biblical Timeline ~ In Room 9 for Maths we have been working on a biblical timeline.

For the biblical timeline we had to find out about B.C and A.D. We had to apply our past knowledge. We learnt that B.C meant before Christ and A.D meant after Jesus’ death. We learnt that the numbers for B.C are backwards, for example Daniel was born in 623 B.C and he died in 539 B.C. To understand this you need to know about integers.

How we created the scale for the timeline ~ The first thing we did was measured the length of the 4 windows making sure we will have enough ribbon to go right across the top. The windows were 5.92m long. Next we cut the ribbon to a 6m Length.

We wanted the timeline to go from 8000 BC to 2000 AD

The first time we did this we subtracted 2000 from 8000 instead of adding. Once we put the ribbon up we realized that we had used the wrong operation. So we had to start again! This is how we worked it out correctly. 8000+2000=10000

We decided that we would have a scale of 1000 years.

This is what we did to reach this decision ~ We found out that between each 1000 years was 55 cm which means that there were 5.5 cm between each 100 years.

Then we placed the ribbon on the top of the window.

Placing the Biblical Characters on the Timeline ~ We then researched other biblical time lines to find out when Noah, Moses, Joseph, David and Goliath, Jonah, Abraham, Elijah, Jacob and Jesus were around. After that we printed off clipart about those people and coloured them in. Finally it was time to put all the pictures up on the timeline. We initially just guessed where they should go but Mrs Lieshout told us to round it out to the nearest 100. This was quite a challenge but this is what we did. We found out that between each 1000 years was 55 cm, which means that there were 5.5 cm between each 100 years.

What we learnt from making the Biblical Timeline  

 -We used many different strategies including addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.  

-We learnt a lot about AD and BC.

-We also learnt about what happened when Moses, David and Goliath, Joseph, Daniel and Noah were around.

All together it was a great learning experience and was also very different to what we were used to.

Ticket prices are - $12 adult, $8 child, $30 family (immediate family).

You can buy your tickets in the library before school on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays until production date.  Please support your child and encourage family and friends to buy tickets.   If you are unable to come in and get your tickets, please fill in the slip at the end of the newsletter.  If you require a family ticket please remember to state what this consists of, as we need to know correct numbers for our seating plan.

Also to Tanesha and Maiya Tagomoa-Kaa, Aimee Brookland and Caleb Brown who are taking part in the “Concert of Popular Sacred Music” in the ‘Year of Faith’ at the Basilica this Sunday @ 4pm.  Everyone is welcome to attend this concert.

Otatara Bus – Tuesday 2^nd July

Due to a Teachers’ Only Day at Hargest Junior High on Tuesday 2^nd July, the Otatara bus will run at 1pm. If you would like your child to catch this early bus, please ring Christine in the office. Otherwise we will presume you have made other transport arrangements for your child.  All other buses will run as normal.

Week 8 ~ In the words of Pope Francis...

Crossing the threshold of faith entails the ongoing conversion of our attitudes, the manners and the standards by which we live; voicing our thoughts in new, unvarnished terms, without papering over differences; offering the new form that Jesus Christ imprints on anyone whom He has touched with his hand and his Gospel of Life, encouraging one another to do something unprecedented for society and for the Church; because “if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation” (2 Cor. 5:17-21).

Camp Fundraiser

The Room 9 children would like to say a big thank you to all pupils, families and teachers for showing your support last Friday. All children had lovely manners when purchasing something and were a pleasure to serve. Watch this space for another mini market in the spring.

Pita Pit Lunch

Congratulations to Tim Richardson who won the Pita Pit Southern Steel colouring competition. As part of his prize Room 5 enjoyed a platter of Pita Pits for lunch on Tuesday, which was brought in by Rachael and Phoenix, both Steel players. Room 5 also enjoyed playing games in the hall with the players afterwards. 

Class Happenings  ~  Room 8

Editing is currently our writing focus. It is the area of the writing process that continues to prove challenging because we confuse this with proofreading – spelling and punctuation.  Editing is where we read through our work to check that what we have written makes sense and creates impact.  It is not uncommon for us to cross out parts we do not like, and write a ‘better’ version somewhere else on our page using arrows or an asterisk.  While our books may look untidy, presentation is not as important as getting down our ideas although it still needs to be readable.  During editing, we may also add extra words to sharpen our ideas and give the reader more information so that they may create a clearer image in their mind. Often we need to share our writing with others so that, that they can help us with the ‘where to next’. We are learning as listeners to provide feedback that is positive and gives the writer ideas that will improve their piece of work.

As part of a recent writing task, we had to edit this story:  It was hot.  We went to the beach. 

Here are our improved versions:

It was a boiling hot day so we decided to go to the beach for a swim until it was night and had cooled down. As the sun went down, we drove home in the rattletrap car.  I heard the last soft wave sweeping past the shore.  Brooklyn

It was so hot that I was sweating so we travelled to the beach in a shiny pink limo to take a nice cold dip in the cool salty water.  I could hear the seagulls squawking and feel the tiny rough stones underneath my bare feet.  Laura

It was so hot, like I was in a boiling pan, so we drove to the beach in the car that was new and white, to cool down in the water.  The water was cool like it would be in a cold spa bath.  The rough rocks were bumping against my legs as the water pushed them along in the strong current.  Ben O

It was burning hot like I was on fire, so we travelled to the beach and stayed for an hour.  We heard the seagulls squawking, making such a racket.  On the way home, our old rusty ute broke down in front of a tree, in the middle of nowhere.  We had to call for a tow truck and fast.  I burst into tears because I thought we would never get home.  The wind was as cold as ice.  About two hours later we were fine.  Emma B
