Compulsory School Mass – This Sunday (22 Sept) 10.30am

The children are to line up in the school foyer at 10.15am and walk over to the church in their class. They are to be in school uniform. A reminder this is a compulsory mass and the children are encouraged to attend.

Room 6 Class Mass ~ Room 6 will be having a class mass on Wednesday, 25 September at 9.30.  This mass will be the usual parish mass.  All welcome.

Writing Information Night ~ A big thanks to the parents who were able to join us for last night ‘s writing meeting. Thank you to Mrs Buxton, Miss Swney and Mrs Tagomoa-Kaa for your presentation. We will be holding this meeting again and I do recommend it to parents.

Lost Jersey ~ We are looking for Shaun Clapperton’s jersey and also a jersey with the name Harry on the tag. Both jerseys have been missing for several weeks now.  Somebody must have these jerseys so we urge parents to check their child is wearing the correct one. Thank you.

FAITH  FACT FOR WEEK 8 ~ Rituals

The word ritual generally means set ways of doing things.  In religious terms therefore one of its meanings is virtually identical to that of rite.  Ritual can also mean the whole body of rites in use in the church.  Thus there is a text called the Roman Ritual which lays down general principles for worship in the Catholic Church.

Congratulations to Brooklyn McLeod who got Distinction for her ballet exam, Honours with Distinction for her jazz exam and she was chosen to perform her beam routine at the gymnastics festival.

Also to Holly Wolf who got Highly Commended for her Primary 2 Jazz Exam.

Room 2 Class Happenings

Arrrr, today is international “Talk like a Pirate Day”!

We have been pirates all day, we made some pirate hats and telescopes and the children have been hunting for treasure!

Our treasure today is double letter words.  That is where two letters are next to each other in the same word, like in look, little, all and parrot.

Our phonics sound today is ‘ar’.  This sound is found in words like park, party, farm, are, Karly and Harding.

It has been a very exciting day today. e have been talking like a pirate all day.  Here are some pirate words:

Dove Retreat 4^th – 6^th October

Dove Catholic Fellowship for Women National team is delighted to invite all women to a retreat weekend with special guest speaker Bev McDonald.

Ski Trip

Many thanks to the parents, who without their help would make this trip impossible. We had a brilliant day up the mountain, everybody thoroughly enjoyed it and are already talking about next years trip.

To celebrate the Mercy Sisters' founding Sacred Heart School, the PTA will be holding a free sausage sizzle for lunch. The children are asked to wear blue mufti clothing (blue symbolising the colour of Mary) and bring a can that will be donated to the food bank.

Gymnastic Festival

Good luck to Bella-Rose Heads, Natalya Hawkes, Annie Armstrong, Megan Sullivan, Brooke Johnstone, Tylee Fiebig, Brooke Cross, Brooklyn McLeod, Xanthe Belesky and Mya O’Connor who are taking part in the Gym Festival this Sunday. I know all your hard work will pay off.

FAITH  FACT FOR WEEK 7 - Social Action

Social Action is correcting the structures that perpetuate the need. Another name for this is Social Justice. Through the lens of social justice, we begin to take a look at the problems and issues facing us in our own communities, the nation and finally the world, and we begin to ask questions such as, "Why is there so much unemployment in our area?" "Why are there so many poor in our community?" "How will the deforestation of our rain forests affect our global climate?" etc. Very often when you are performing social service, you also become involved in solving the problem which created the need in the first place, and the two are closely related and often blend together. An example of this would be, someone comes to your food pantry, and tells you he/she has no food, because he/she lost their job recently. You may know of an employer looking to hire someone right away for a job requiring little or no skills. You give that person food, then place that person in touch with the employer. You then would have solved both problems for that person. (a) The immediate need of food through an act of charity (social service) and (b) you would have corrected the problem, which created and perpetuated the need. (social justice).

Hockey Results

Super Stars played Donovan and won 6-0. Player Of the Day was Sam Richardson.

Ballers just had a fun game. To finish off the season Mr Page has organised a fun hockey game for our players against Mums or Dads next Wednesday at 3.30pm. See you there!

Achievements

Congratulations to Mya O’Connor who was placed 4^th in the South Island Gymnastic Comps in Timaru last weekend. Her team was also placed 3^rd overall.

Also congratulations to Ben O'Connor who came first place in the Southland Literacy Fathers’ Day poem competition.  Well done.

LIGHT POLLUTION - On a clear night, with no clouds to be seen, the moonlight shining, and no artificial lights to block the view, a Mum and daughter walk outside. They look up into the sky and see 40 billion stars in the sky. But then they look to their right and see thousands of city lights, too many to count! The whole city is lit up. It looks really pretty but don’t be tricked by this prettiness, because that’s light pollution. The daughter asks her Mum about light pollution and why they have it. The daughter asks so many questions because she doesn’t know much light pollution, and not many other people don’t know either! So the Mum tells her daughter more about light pollution. Did you know, Tekapo has the least light amount of light pollution, or that light pollution causes death for some animals? Turtles hatching depend on moonlight and starlight to guide them to water, but often end up heading toward lit up parking lots, beach houses and hotels by mistake!

“WOW Mum I didn’t know any of that!” “Is there any way that we can stop light pollution?”  “Well not completely but there is a way we can prevent some of it.”

Three easy ways to make your local sky darker is to close the blinds in your house to prevent interior lights from shinning outside, you can also turn off lights that you aren’t using, and if you’ve got outdoor lighting buy some shielding to prevent them shining skyward.

Amazing Asteroids

Do you know that NASA is doing a mission to get an asteroid into a space bag but they don’t have the funds and the money?

Do you know what an asteroid is? 

Well we are going to explain what an asteroid is. It is a large rock in outer space. They can be as small as a grain of sand or large as a dwarf planet. They orbit around the sun in the inner solar system.

What does NASA do?

NASA is the U.S National Aeronautics and Space Administration, which is the U.S Government’s civilian space agency. NASA was responsible for the early rock testing of moon rocks and the first U.S manned missions into space.

How does the mission work?

They are going to go around the moon to gather speed. Then they are going to fly to a position where they have seen an asteroid. They will capture an asteroid and take a sample of it and fly back to earth to study it. They want to know what they are made of and where they come from.  

Why we should donate money to NASA.

So it’s easy to find out what asteroids are made from. This will help us know where asteroids come from and how they were formed. It might tell us if there is life elsewhere in space or they could discover new life forms or even new materials and minerals that we didn’t know existed. They might find something that can help us in the future. So that is why we told you about asteroid and NASA and why you should donate money to NASA!!!!  By Justin and Cory

‘Play is the Way’ run by Wilson McCaskill is a 90 min free workshop for parents. This workshop is an interactive experience where parents and carers will have the opportunity to participate in activities that will highlight the need to develop the personal and social capabilities that empower children to be all they can be. It is about creating the tools to prepare our children to cope in an exciting, unpredictable and rapidly evolving world, because ‘life shrinks or expands in proportion to one’s courage’.
