30 May

Dear Parents

It has been a busy week with children attending the SIT performance on Tuesday and having our Cross Country yesterday. A big thanks to all the parents who were able to help and also to cheer on the children as they finished their race.

Sacred Heart Day
Next Friday is Sacred Heart Feast Day. We will celebrate with a Mass in the morning, a sausage sizzle run by the PTA, followed by some activities in the afternoon. A note will be sent home next week with more detail.

Fonterra Milk
We will begin this on Tuesday next week. It will run each Tuesday and Thursday and will coincide with the brain break at 11.20 am.
Any queries, please contact me.

We ran the 7, 6 and 5 year old races as fun runs and so did not award 1st, 2nd and 3rd for these races.
The photos from the school Cross Country will hang in the corridor for all to view.  If you wish to get a copy of any of these photos, you can email Mrs Buxton: rbuxton@shsinv.school.nz before Friday 14 June 2013, and she will email you a copy of the photo you require.
After our latest teacher meeting we will be holding another round of ‘parent and child interviews’, followed by a meeting with Waverley Park School parents. One of the benefits of our involvement for me has been a greater awareness of how children and parents perceive the writing process at school. As teachers we often think everyone knows this process, but parental experiences and expectations are often completely different.
I wish to thank the group of parents who have volunteered to be a part of our ‘target group’. I will include more of our outcome and findings after our next parent meeting.

Fire Risk
With 2 schools targeted this week by an arsonist, we have received a letter from the fire brigade to be vigilant over the weekends and when the school is closed. Can I ask any parents around to keep an extra lookout for any suspicious behaviour. If so, please ring the Police on 111.

Production
Room 1 is looking for any animal costumes that you may have or know of, that could be used for our production.  They will need to be able to fit 5 and 6 year olds.  If you can help with this please see Mrs Williams.

Rooms 7, 8 & 9 will be using ribbons, buttons and material (especially gold, silver and black) for their costumes.  If you have any of these items and you would like to donate them towards our list of requirements, it would be much appreciated. A box will be placed outside Room 9. Thank you.

School Crossing
Thank you to the parents who went on a roster to patrol the crossing before and after school. Due to the decrease in crossing use recently it has been decided to wind up the duty for the wintry months.
We will look at restarting in late September or October depending on observed crossing use. Could all vests and jackets be dropped into the school office please.  Thank you ~ Reuben Boniface

Week 4
In the words of Pope Francis...

Crossing the threshold of faith is acting, trusting in the power of the Holy Spirit present in the Church and who is also manifest in the signs of the times; it is accompanying the constant movement of life and of history without falling into the paralysing defeatism that regards any time in the past as being better; it is a sense of urgency to think of something new, to contribute something new, to create something new, kneading into life “the new leaven of justice and holiness” (cf. 1 Cor. 5:8).

Rippa Rugby Tournament
Due to insufficient numbers we will not be entering teams for this tournament. Thank you to the parents who did show an interest.

Church Cleaners’
There is a great need for volunteers to help clean Sacred Heart Church. This takes two people approx. 1 hour. There are two vacuum cleaners available and there is no set time you have to do the cleaning. The more we get, you may only be required to clean once or twice a year. Thank you in anticipation, please contact Cecilia Russell 215-4666 or Pat Tippen 215-9971.

Cross Country Results
Yesterday we ran our school Cross Country and it was a great event despite the weather not co-operating. The children participated well, though they got a bit wet!  It was great to have such great parent support, as this is an event that we cannot do without your help.
The Southland Cross Country Association requires us to take the age of the students as the age they are on the 31st of December 2013. Only the students that are 10 & 11 years old compete at Zone and Southland level. So the students that came in the first 6 places for the 10 and 11 yr old races will be
going to the Zones. Below are the results:

Achievements
Danye Takitimu danced last weekend at the Dunedin Dancing Competitions and got two first placings and a third.
Breyah Takitimu got five 1st placings, two 2nd placings and a 3rd.
Breyah also won the Junior Ballet Championships, got highest points for her age group, a special award for her Demi, and won the under 12 scholarship.

Class Happenings – Room 2

Yesterday we ran the Cross Country.  We learned that Cross Country means that you actually run across the country, it's a long running race.  Most of the children were very excited about running in the race but we had to wait until the very last minute to decide if we were able to participate in the very cold weather. Luckily there was a small break in the weather and we ended up running the race in light rain.  Lots of us thought that running for such a long way is quite hard but if you keep trying you can get to the finish!  Even Mrs Stupples fell over into the mud, but she got up and kept trying too, just like the Room 2 kids.
