Dear Parents

A big thank you to all your children for their excellent behaviour yesterday at the combined schools’ Mass and afterwards when we had our visitors from Verdon and St. Thomas’. The photographer from “The Eye” made special mention to me of how polite and helpful our children were while she was here taking photos.

Also what a great photo in today’s paper. Thanks to the O’Donnell family for the use of their balloon entrance structure. It was an excellent backdrop for our photogenic 5 yr olds.

It was especially good to see the Verdon senior students here. Our children really enjoyed their presence at school yesterday.

We also had an incident yesterday where one of the bus drivers was in a hurry to leave and somehow managed to hit the basketball hoop, breaking a window and causing a small cut to one of our pupils. Again a big thanks to the staff and especially our senior students who helped with their younger buddies, as we moved to another bus and onto the Mass.

All correct procedures were followed to ensure our children’s safety and I have discussed this with the bus company and Board chairperson.

Today we farewell our students from the Southland Campus and we thank them for their input over the last 2 weeks.

Welcome to Quin Brown who joined the children in Room 2 today. We hope he and his family enjoy their time with us at Sacred Heart School.

Thank you to Hannah Skeggs who is helping the Room 7, 8 & 9 children out with their dance practise for this year’s production.

Production

Rooms 7, 8 & 9 will be using ribbons, buttons and material (especially gold, silver and black) for their costumes.  If you have any of these items and you would like to donate them towards our list of requirements, it would be much appreciated. A box will be placed outside Room 9. Thank you.

Achievements

Congratulations  to Fabian O’Donnell and his sister Giovanna on their baptism, last weekend. 

The Sacred Heart Tap dancers competed at the weekend and all went away with first place titles as well as each of them earning special awards - the dancers competing were Malachi Lange, Anika Winders, Kayla Boniface and Aimee Brookland.  A pretty awesome effort from Sacred Heart pupils!

Kayla Boniface who has been selected in a Jazz Dance group to perform at the Sharks Basketball game this weekend.

Brooke Cross who got 1^st overall for the 7yrs Gymnastic tournament last weekend in Dunedin. This was Brooke’s first competition.

Class Happenings – Room 1

Yesterday was Catholic Schools’ day.  We all went on a bus to the Invercargill Working Men’s Club and had a combined mass with all the Catholic schools in Invercargill, which was about 1000 children.  Father Hook took the mass and we all thoroughly enjoyed listening to him sing and learning a new song.

Once back at school, St Thomas’ from Winton joined us for lunch and an action packed afternoon of fun activities.

Catholic Schools Day ~ Wednesday 22^nd May

Next Wednesday is Catholic Schools’ Day. This year we have planned to hold a joint Mass involving all the Invercargill Catholic Schools, to be held at The Invercargill Working Means Club 11am for approx 1 hour.

With only 1000 seats available, we are still juggling the legistics, as our combined rollls are over 1500. 

I will let you know if there are any changes asap.

Groups of senior students from Verdon will return with us and after we all have lunch, they will run some sports sessions with our senior students.

A programme for the junior school is still being developed.

St. Thomas’s pupils from Winton have been invited back to Sacred Heart to spend the rest of the day with us.

Please ensure your child is in correct school uniform, definitely no gym shoes.

There will be no ‘heat ups’ this day as our timetable will be rather flexible.

Our school mass this term is on Sunday 26^th May. We expect all children to attend.

Fonterra Milk Scheme

I will be visited next week by Fonterra representatives in anticipation of our joining the “Milk in Schools Scheme”. I will be able to confirm start dates after that meeting.

Sports Team Procedures

If you have any questions regarding sports, please contact the school. As soon as we have the draw, we will advertise them on the noticeboard in the junior corridor.

Library Bags

These are available at the office for $2 each. All children are required to have a library bag to help keep the books clean and tidy.

Reading Programme

Thank you to those parents who were able to attend the meeting last night.

Also as the next stage in our LCN (Learning Change Network) contract, a small group of children will go to Waverley Park School to share their writing journeys with other children.

A part of our programme that we have always done but haven’t considered it too special, is using children as buddy readers and writers. When we shared these as part of  our LCN meeting, there was a lot of interest from the other schools who thought it innovative to do on such a large scale. So often we find it is hugely beneficial for both the reader and the listener in that the reader now has a real audience for their stories and the listener develops critical questioning skills they can use with their own work.

Sports Results

Our Year 1/2 Cricket Team had their 1^st game against Woodlands yesterday and won 6 – 1.   Well Done!  Player of the Day went to Robbie Humm.

Rippa Rugby Championships

Rugby Southland is holding a one day Rippa Rugby Tournament Sunday 30^th June starting at 11am. Teams are made up of Year 1 - 6 players and must consist of 5 boys and 5 girls. If your child is interesting in playing in this tournament, please contact Christine.

Oklahoma

The children had a visit this afternoon from some of the Verdon pupils performing in their production “Oklahoma”. This sneak preview was enjoyed by many. Tickets are available from Verdon College $20 adults, $10 children or a family pass for $50. The production runs from 22 – 26 May.

Netball South ~ My Little Team & Me

Class Happenings – Room 9

Pig Hunting

Every year when it was my special day dad would drag me out of bed so we can go pig hunting.

When we get there we get out and went to see my Dad’s friend because he and his son were coming with us. So we graded our guns and went up the hill.

We see a couple of pigs in the gully and sneak up to them. Cam friend’s son gets out his gun and BOOM that one is down. Now we have to get the other one. Dad gets his gun out and shoots it.

Now it is my turn to have a go and my job is getting the pigs in the gorse. I get the first pig but I cannot find the other one. We  go get Cam so he can help me. Finally we find it. We carry them back to Dad and he puts it under a tree so we can get it tomorrow when we come out of the bush.     Tom

The Bush Walk

“Where are we going?” I asked. “It’s a surprise” said Dad. We soon got there. And guess where we were. We were at a bush walk.

There was green grass, birds chirping and fresh air everywhere. “Wow look” said Jake “Tree vines” “Cool” I reply.

So Jake and I swung from vine to vine to vine. You’ve just got to swing then let go, then grab hold of another one. We kept on going until kalomph!

I smacked right into a tree.

It was a crack-up. The tree must have thought I was George of the Jungle. Please don’t do what I did it wasn’t pretty.      Logan

FAITH FACTS - Year of Faith Inserts for the Weekly Newsletter

Faith Facts for our school newsletters during Term 2 are quotes from Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio, aka Pope Francis, on the theme of Porta Fidei, the Door of Faith.  He says, “Whereas a closed door harms us, paralyses us, separates us, the image of an open door has always been the symbol of light, friendship, joy, freedom, confidence. How we need to recover these things! ... What does crossing the threshold of faith challenge us to do?”

Term 2 signals the start of winter sports and we have teams taking part in hockey, netball and table tennis through the school. Also a lot of our children play rugby or soccer for clubs.

We also have three aerobic teams who are preparing for their festival and we will again take part in the Polyfest later in the year.

This term we will be starting practices for our school production.

Congratulations to Ella Van-Eeden who received the Sacrament of Baptism during the holidays.

Our prayers are with Jimmy Barris and his family this week.

Parent Meeting (Re: Senior School Reading)

On Wednesday 15th May there will be a meeting for parents to discuss and demonstrate the Reading Programme in the Senior Syndicate. This will be at 7pm.  All parents are welcome to attend this. If your child is in Year 3 this might be a good meeting to come to as it will help you understand the change in emphasis that occurs in the teaching of reading from ‘learning to read’ to ‘reading to learn’. Could you please let Christine know if you are attending this meeting?

It is similar to the meeting we ran 3 years ago.

New Website

With the school facebook page being used more and more, the school website needs a drastic overhaul to keep up with the times. This will be completed this term and will have easier newsletters, calendars and contact links than at present.

School Mass – Trinity Sunday 26^th May

Our school mass this term is on Sunday 26^th May. We expect all children to attend.

The Sacramental programme will also be starting this term for the children. There will be more information available as soon as dates are confirmed.

Chess Club

Chess club is up and running again for terms 2 and 3.  It is held on Monday lunch times in the library.  You do not need to know how to play, we can teach you, but you must be in Rooms 6,7,8 or 9.

Boost

Boost Club begins again this term and will now run in Room 3 every second Friday, starting tomorrow.  Boost 1 children will be from 11.30 – 2.45 and Boost 2 children will join us from 1.15-2.45. If your child was in Boost last year, they are automatically included in the same class this year. Children who are new to Boost this year have already been contacted. Mrs Stupples

Aimee Brookland's tap dancing trio was picked to perform live on the breakfast show in the holidays, as a warm up for "NZ Got Talent". They won the best act by a NZ poll which also featured 2 other performances. The girls went onto audition for NZ Got Talent later in the day. They find out around June 24th if they have made it through to the next stage or not.

Class Happenings – Room 8

We are continuing our writing journey and have produced many great pieces.  Lots of time is spent sharing our ideas with others so that we may strengthen these in our minds before we put pencil to paper.  The writing process allows us to draft our thoughts, followed by editing and proofreading what we have written.  This may take us many days.  Sometimes we get to publish our final piece when we are happy with it.  Below are some examples we wrote about a favourite toy.

My teddy bear is so big that he takes up a whole chair.  He is like a human and you can sit on him just like a chair.  My bear is from 1992 and he is wearing 1992 clothes with a watch in his pocket.  He has a striped hat like what old people wore in the olden days.  He has so much fur on him that he makes me sneeze.  My Nana and Grandad gave him to me when I was one.  He is so cool and I love him to bits.  His name is Poppa Joe.   Azriel

My best teddy bear’s name is Bronty and she is the same age as me.  She is worn out because I keep cuddling her.  My Aunty got her from America.  Her ears have nearly fallen off and she used to have white fur with a black bow.  Now she is brown.  She also had a little star and wore black shoes.  I sleep with her.   Hannah

My teddy bear’s name is Zeke and I got him from my Nana when I was born.  He is old because his fur is coming out.  He sits beside my pillow now.  He is soft and I like him.  He was my very first teddy bear ever.  I used to take him everywhere up town.  Zeke is at home sitting there keeping warm.  He likes it there.   Reilly

My first scooter was a red and silver Razor.  It had big red wheels that were bumpy because I kept doing skids.  My scooter had adjustable bars that could fold down to fit into small places. It had red grip tape and red foam grips.   I used to ride it to kindergarten and millions of other places that I can’t think of.  After a few years it got so worn out and there was no point in getting new wheels and grips.  Mum and Dad took it to the dump and I got a new scooter.  My new scooter is called an MGP.

It is designed for stunts so it is much stronger.   Jakobe

Ok, it’s time to tell you about my big teddy bear.  He was my favourite toy and I got him from my Mum and Dad when I was a baby.  He was as big as me!  He has lots of hair and a striped bowtie.  I used to keep him on my bed but now he’s in the wardrobe.  I put him in the wardrobe so Mum wouldn’t find him.  My sister always threw him everywhere.  The thing that I like about him is that he’s easy to hold and he is like a real baby bear.   Ethan

Ordinary Time is the days in the Church calendar

Dear Parents

Thank you to everybody for all their work this term.

All the parents who have helped with sports teams, with swimming, as parent helpers at school events and functions – It has been a very busy and productive term and I look forward to Term 2 starting on Monday 6^th May.

BOT Elections

By now all parents/caregivers should have received your nomination forms and information about the Board and Elections. We are looking for a couple of new members this year, so please consider this.

It is an opportunity to have more involvement in your child’s education at a governance level and is a very worthwhile and rewarding position. Without wanting to sound too PC, we do need another female member to provide some more balance to our Board. If you are interested and want to know more, please contact me.

Out Of School Music Classes

We are now taking enrolments for the Term 2 Music Awareness class. This is a 6 week class for 5-6 year olds & gives them a great introduction to music. They learn rhythm, beat, high notes & low notes etc. Children use a variety of percussion instruments & have an opportunity to see & hear a variety of instruments. Classes are run from Southland Girls High on Saturday morning at 11.30. Cost is $30. We also run a music and movement class for children 6 months to 5 years.

Beginner ‘How to of Coaching’ – Course for Parent Coaches Wed - 17th April  7 – 8.45pm
Next week Sport Southland is delighted to have the services of Mark Borthwick, Coaching Director from Cricket Wellington to facilitate a Beginner ‘How to of Coaching’ course for Parent Coaches. This course is designed for parents (or other family members) who have been roped in to coaching or have limited coaching experience. It is generic in nature (rather than sport specific), and focuses on the ‘How’ rather than that ‘What’ to coach, but does utilise the occasional sport specific drill to demonstrate concepts, but the focus is on the concepts and not the drills.

Facilitator: Mark is the current Coaching Director from Cricket Wellington and brings with him a wealth of knowledge and experience as a cricket coach (former coach of Wellington Blaze women’s team) and as a former Assistant HOD Physical Education at Wellington College and his passion for coaching and humour ensures you will learn and have the occasional laugh during the session.
Registration: To register, please email andrew.petrie@sportsouthland.co.nz . Please note that this course is limited to 30 places, so get your registration in as soon as possible. Please ensure you have appropriate clothing and footwear for light activities, used to demonstrate concepts. Each participant will receive a coaching resource to take away at the end of the session.

Class Happenings – Room 7

Hide and Seek.

I am ready come and find me. Make sure I don’t flatten it. I am far from my house. It’s a good spot. Suddenly I hear a rustling noise. It wasn’t me. So I crawled away. My sister found me. The game was over. I ran to my house.  Seamus

I’m ready come and find me. The place smelt like sweaty socks and the dark places where full of clothes. I better stay quiet. The floor is hot and my hiding spot was full of clothes and they are wet. I can hear them whispering. I have to stay still. They are getting closer I had better stay in the cupboard and I need to keep my feet in.

The cupboard is wet and it has spider webs and it smells like sweaty feet now. After twenty minutes they found me, it was a great game.   Matthew F

Do you like waking up on a Monday morning?

Oh no it’s Monday morning! Oh man School?! I’m so tired it’s six o’clock in the morning. I want to go back to sleep. I feel like a lazy pig not wanting to get up. I get up, but I really don’t want to. Finally I stood up and then I realise if I don’t go to school I won’t learn. So I quickly get dressed, have breakfast, and do my jobs. I start slowly walking to the bus. The bus is always freezing so I put my jacket on.   Jasmine
