If needed extra credit card payment requests are also available at the office. Any questions feel free to call Susanne Brown (PTA Chairperson) on 2158883.

Chess Club

If there are any unused chess sets at home that you are no longer using and would like to donate, we would love to see them. Thank you ~ Mrs Stupples

Room 8 Class Happenings

This week The Flakes reading group have been reading about how Anzac Biscuits came to be.
We learned that ANZAC stands for Australia New Zealand Army Corp. We also learned that the wives and girlfriends of the Army troops made Anzac Biscuits because they can be kept for a long time and were made out of oats so the men didn’t get hungry quickly.
Today we decided that we would have a go at making the biscuits ourselves.
Everyone in room 8 got to taste them and so did some of the teachers, they were delicious!!!
Here is the recipe so you can have a go at home 

ANZAC BISCUITS
1 cup flour

1 cup caster sugar

1 cup desiccated coconut

2 cups rolled oats

125g butter

2 tbsp golden syrup

1 tsp baking soda

3 tbsp boiling water
1. Heat oven to 180°C (160°C fan bake). Line two baking trays with non-stick baking paper.
Place flour, caster sugar, coconut and oats in a bowl and stir to combine. Make a well in the centre.
2. Place butter and golden syrup in a saucepan to melt, or microwave in a bowl to melt. Dissolve baking soda in boiling water. Add melted ingredients and dissolved baking soda to dry ingredients and mix to combine.
3. Roll spoonfuls into balls and press onto prepared baking trays, allowing space for biscuits to spread while cooking.
4. Bake for 15 minutes or until golden brown. Remove to a wire rack to cool, and enjoy!

25 March

Dear Parents

With the new veranda finally in use, I’m sure you will agree it does add some balance to the school.
It will come in very handy in the winter months ahead.
A couple of reminders are the Interviews on 11 & 12 April (School closes at 12.30 on Monday 11).
Teachers Only Day next Friday 1st April – no this is not an April Fool’s joke.
Also the Camp meeting for Year 6 pupils which is being held 29 March @ 7.30 pm.

Welcome to Caleb Ridd who joined the children in Room 1 on Tuesday.

Farewell to the Andrews family who are returning to Christchurch.
We wish them well and will be thinking of them.

School Mass
Thank you to those children who attended our school mass last Sunday – also to Miss O’Neill and the staff for the organisation. Unfortunately I was very disappointed with the number of children in attendance. As a percentage of our total role, it was the poorest in my association with the school.
Thanks to those parents who sent in apologies but it was rather embarrassing to see we were unable to fill up our allocated seats. We only have 3 – 4 school masses a year which are an important part of our school life and I would like to ask for your assistance for next time regarding attendance.

MANNERS: COURTESY AND RESPECT
We have been talking to the children about the appropriate ways to relate to other children and adults, who we interact with in our school day.
• Use of please, thank you, excuse me, pardon me…
• Regular greetings of ‘Good morning’, ‘Good afternoon.’ etc.
• Not interrupting a speaker
• Being mindful of other children and adults movements around school eg. Holding doors open, helping to carry something for others, providing space to sit etc.
• Responding to others appropriately eg not answering back or responding rudely to anyone (Remember the old adage: If it can’t be said nicely don’t say anything at all).
The staff will be looking for and highlighting courteous and respectful behaviour both in and out of the classroom.

Under the watchful eye of Mr Downing and excellent training sessions, with older and more experienced club members, the Appleby team learnt essential skills to help them progress in the game. The boys, combined with Fernworth, Otatara and Salford, made up a determined team and exciting sideline entertainment.

Room 9 Class Happenings

Paper planes - Every Friday Miss Page comes to Room 9 to teach our class. Last Friday we made paper planes, this Friday we are going to fly them.
Who is going to be the winner? I say in my head Eli & Sam T or Jordan and I, maybe even Natasha and Ashleigh. It is fun making paper planes.
Three days until Friday, that’s when we’ll fly them, it will be fun. Conor & Ben S haven’t even finished their paper plane.
It was a fun time making paper planes but hard work. We flew them. The winners are Eli & Sam T,
their plane flew 17.1m. By Conor and Tom

Swimming - Yes - three weeks of swimming, that means less work. But a bit harder because we are in the pool swimming back and forth to each side of the pool in the deeper end of the pool. (I hope there are no sharks!)
On the first day of swimming I was nervous about getting into the pool because it was freezing cold. When I jumped into the pool I almost ended up frozen like an ice cube!
50 length’s of butterfly, 100 lengths of freestyle, 200 lengths of backstroke - just jokes!!!!!!(I hope)
AHHHHHHHHHHH!!! SPLASH - wow that was scary. I just jumped off that HUGE diving board to practise what to do if I had to jump off a sinking ship. I hope I don’t have to do that in real life!
Finally our swimming group time is up but now I have to go through terrible time of waiting.
Bree and Sam S
