Dear Parents

It seems hard to believe that tomorrow is the last day of term 3 and when we come back it will be the start of November.

A big thank you to all parents who have been able to assist with our school programme this term, in particular to all our sports coaches and managers. Your commitment has been much appreciated.

Next term starts on Tuesday 25^th October and finishes on Wednesday 14^th December at 12.30 pm.

It is very short because of the holiday changes due to the Rugby World Cup.

In week one next term we look forward to the Year 6 camp at Stewart Island.

We can also look forward to the All Blacks on their country wide tour, showing off the Webb Ellis Cup (I hope).

FIRST COMMUNION - SUNDAY 20 NOVEMBER 1.30PM

The children who have received the Sacrament of Confirmation will now begin preparation for First Holy Communion. Please bring your workbooks. The first session will be tomorrow morning – 9.30 till 10.30 in Room one. The subsequent sessions will be each Friday of the first four weeks next term.

There will be a parent / child meeting on the Wednesday of the first week of school (26 October) at 7pm in Room 5.

FIRST COMMUNION HELPERS

Convent Cup

We were fortunate to have a very successful day at Verdon College on Monday for the Convent Cup.

All our teams performed with credit, especially our Mini-ball team, who won the competition.

Road Safety

I thank Constable Paul Frith for highlighting the speeding problems outside school in the paper last week. This has been an on-going issue. The traffic lights have been excellent in providing a safe crossing. Our next wish is to have flashing lights installed, such as those outside Boys High & Waihopai which can be put up to encourage people to slow down when passing the school.

Camp Fundraiser Fun Friday – 7^th October

Achievements

Congratulations to Jake Meikle who was placed 2^nd in the 8 – 11yrs 85cc and 4^th in the 8 – 17 yrs 65cc Christchurch King of the Canterbury Motocross Champs last weekend.

Congratulations to Emma Harrington who was placed 1^st in her song & tap routine, and 1^st in her duo (with Kayla Boniface) in the Dance Competitions recently. She was awarded a Highly Commended.

Special thanks to Nicki Brookland and Billie Bower for the fantastic job last Sunday in organising the fun filled family trial. It's great to have volunteers to help organise and run these events and from the comments I've had, it appears everyone enjoyed being out in the sunshine and had a great afternoon - of course the fact they were finished in time for the rugby was also a hit.

Thanks to everyone who participated, we hope you all enjoyed yourselves.

Class Happenings – Room 8

Wow this term has gone so fast. This term we have been learning about why people preserve food. Take a look at some of the photos of our venn diagrams that we did about freezing and drying types of food. We also tested what would happen to some food if it was left out over the term. Most of our hypotheses were correct, BUT we did find out that keeping them in a plastic bag actually kept them nicer for longer.

This week we have been working with Room 3 on our end of the year calendars. Tomorrow we will be putting the finishing touches to them using comic life. Keep an eye out for them next term.

Dear Parents

Welcome to Aleck Ricamor who joined the children in Room 3 on Monday. We hope she and her family enjoy their time at Sacred Heart School.

We have been fortunate to have Constable Paul Frith at school this week, working with all the classes on walking safely. Our next step is to find some sponsorship to provide high visibility vests for all children who walk and bike or bus to school. The note below highlights why road safety is an important part of our school programme.

I must say I have really enjoyed the Rugby World Cup as it has allowed me to take back control of the TV remote almost every night.

To this end, I hope you will support the PTA car trial on this Sunday 2^nd Oct. It has been timed to allow couch potatoes such as myself, to spend some quality family fun time before the All Blacks play. Very well done.

Road Safety

We have been informed by the Police, that on Monday 19^th Sept from 8 – 9 am a speed camera was set up outside the church and an alarming total of 146 speeding tickets were recorded and issued, in a period of one hour. This is a serious problem and one we have been aware of for a long time. With the Police now involved, we look for their support in finding some solutions to this problem.

Convent Cup

On Monday, the Year 5 & 6 children will travel to Verdon College to take part in this annual sports event between the local Catholic Schools. We have 3 mini-ball teams, 2 soccer teams and 2 netball teams. Thank you to the parents who have put their hands up to help manage and coach these teams. A note will go home tomorrow.

Achievements

Congratulations to Eli Winders who won the Invercargill section of the “Creative Southland Speeches” on Monday night. And also to Sam Downing & Aidan Jones who competed well and were also a credit to our school.

Hannah Dawson and Breyah Takitimu got first equal, highest marks at the Lamuse Dance school for their Jazz Exam recently, both getting 97.5 out of 100.

Lucy Baynes who received a 1^st in both her Solo and Song & Dance routines at the competitions last weekend.

Kayla Boniface received ‘Honours’ in her Jazz exam and a 1ST in her championship for tap dancing, as well as a special award for Judges Choice, at the tap dancing comps at the weekend.

Aimee Brookland got 5 x1st, 2x 2^nd (including her Championship dance) & a 3^rd, in the Tap Dancing Open competitions held last weekend.

Disco

Thanks to all who supported the Disco last week, it appears the children had a great time. A special thanks to one of our own parents, Deon Takitimu, who very kindly took up the role of DJ for the night. We very much appreciate your being the DJ for the evening and providing the kids with plenty of great dancing music, making the evening a huge success. Thanks also to all the parent helpers on the night, as well as a few of our older ex Sacred Heart siblings – without you all, we would not be able to run these fun events.

Car Trial

We are having our FREE annual Family Car Trial this Sunday 2 Oct.

· Register your team from 12.30 – 1.00pm at the School Hall. 1^st car will leave at 1.00pm (for those of you wanting to get home for the rugby). The car trial should take approx 1.15 – 2.00 hrs (depending on how clever you are) & is approx 25kms.

· For the first time ever a trophy for 1^st place will be given!

· You will need a $1 & a camera. You will also be stopping along the way for a chance to buy a coffee/hot chocolate at a cost of $4.

· We will finish up with afternoon tea in the hall, with the results given out, please bring a plate.

· So please come & have some fun. See you & your family there.

How to Cross the Road Safely.

Constable Paul has been instructing classrooms this week on Road Safety. Today we practised crossing the road near Sacred Heart with a buddy from Room 1. We wore bright raincoats and High V vests that were easily visible to drivers.

Josh shares how to cross the road safely.

First you take a step back from the kerb. Then you look 4 ways –front, back, left and right. Listen for cars, trucks and vans. When it is safe to cross- stop, look and listen. As you cross the road, keep listening and looking both ways. That’s the safe way of crossing the road. Just follow the steps.

Room 7 and 8 Class Mass

We are practising for our Class Mass tomorrow. All parents, grandparents and extended family are warmly invited to celebrate with us at 9:30am in the church. Children have been asked to bring a small plate of finger food to share in the hall afterwards. Students have also been asked to wear their school uniform to Mass and bring their PE gear in a bag to change into later.

Marbles in the Jar Treat.

In recognition of empting our marble jar (from being able to work as a team), we have decided to have a dress up day next Wednesday. This maybe a famous person, a favourite costume, wig……In the afternoon we will explore popular websites and programs on the laptops.

Dear Parents

The town was certainly busy with a lot of people in attendance at the Argentina vs Romania rugby game. We were fortunate the weather was so fine. The children have enjoyed supporting the underdogs as the competition has progressed.

Tomorrow we farewell our 3^rd year teachers’ college students, Whea Michelle & Miss Macdonald.

We thank them for their input and wish them all the best for their futures.

A big thank you to the netball and hockey coaches for all your work this season. This has been much appreciated by all the children involved.

I hope all the children enjoy the disco tonight. Unfortunately, I will be at a meeting in Gore and will miss my first disco.

Our prayers are with Mrs Stupples and her family.

Happy Birthday to Bishop Colin and best wishes to Sr Maria for Mercy Day on Saturday.

FIRST COMMUNION DAY

First Communion Day will be Sunday 20 November at 1.30pm in the church followed by an afternoon tea celebration in the hall.

Reports

A recommendation from our recent ERO report was in regards our school reports.

At present we indicate children’s achievements against national norms (PAT test, e-asTTle, Running Records, Numeracy project work and class observations).

Individual children’s comments relate to entry level information in regards, reading, writing & maths, and from that point (which is different for all children), we plot their next learning steps. This explains why some children within the same class have different goals at different levels, but may have the same ‘at expected level’ comment.

The ERO recommendation is that we change from this type of report to one based upon the national standards in mathematics, writing & reading. The standards are aspirational in that the Ministry of Education do not expect the majority of children to attain them. Further, because they are tied to the end of a child’s 1^st, 2^nd & 3^rd year at school and the end of Year 4, 5 & 6 – most of our children should be below their expected standard at the time of our first report in April.

This will cause some anxiety amongst parents.

I ask for parents to volunteer to be part of a consultation group to discuss this. A cross section from all classes would be beneficial as this will impact on all children. Please contact me at principal@shsinv.school.nz

Southland Speech Competition

Good luck to Eli Winders and Samuel Downing who will represent the school at the next stage of this, at James Hargest on Monday. Eli’s speech is on the ‘Kepler Track’ and Sam’s is on ‘Why Homework Should be Banned’.

Badminton

There will be an inter-school badminton competition starting Thursday 3^rd Nov – 8^th Dec, 3.45 – 4.45 pm. 4 players per team $30 per person. Interested pupils can see Mr Forde please.

Flippa Ball will start next Friday - these teams are the same as the teams in Term 1. We have a team without a coach. If you are able to coach please let Mrs T-K know. We also have a few spaces free if your child would like to play, see Mrs T-K. This will go next term as well and is for all ages. The year 4, 5 and 6 children however will need to be confident swimmers as they will play in the big pool.

Last Friday the children bombarded their parents in a Hockey challenge.

I believe the parents have been secretly training!!!

This was evident in some fancy footwork by Mr Flawn and strategic play by the rest of his team. A goal was disallowed by an unbiased ref.

However the parents lacked energy in the 2^nd half, so a win was granted to the children.

Room 6’s visit to the Recycling Depot.

As part of our Integrated Unit on Reuse, Reduce and Recycle, Room 5 and 6 visited the MRF (Material Recovery Facility). Here we learnt about how our rubbish is recycled in Invercargill. Below, we have listed some of the facts we found out.

We no longer need to squash our milk bottles. If we do squash them, the machine thinks they are paper. We saw some furniture that has been made from recycled materials.

This table is made from recycled products.

Clothing or fabric of any kind is not to be put into the recycling bin as it can get tangled in the machinery and stop it from working. We no longer need to take the paper off the cans or squash them. The cans are melted down and used to make other metal products like furniture and more cans. Dirty tissues are not recyclable but should go in the rubbish. The people who work at the recycle depot stand at a conveyor belt that is called the ‘sort line’.

All these products can be recycled.

A large machine, called the ‘Hungry Monster’ crushes the white polystyrene and forms it into very large blocks. One of the main messages we received was “Wash don’t Squash” so remember this when you are sorting your rubbish to put in the new recycling bin with the yellow lid. The Year 5 All Saints Netball Team

The Future Ferns were lucky enough to have Steel and Silver Fern netball players Wendy Frew and Sheryl Scanlan attend their practice. The children impressed, with their knowledge of the visitors and asked excellent questions. After a fun game they gave the children some useful tips to improve their skills. Wendy and Sheryl really enjoyed the rivalry and the opportunity to play with the children.

Ski Trip

Each car will need to bring a camera and $1. For the first time ever a trophy for 1^st place will be given! So please come & have some fun. Time to be advised.

Disco – Thursday 22^nd September - Gold coin donation (per family) on the night please

Due to constraints with times when we can access the hall this year, we have had to change the start times a little as shown below, and apologise to those with younger children for the later start. All children are welcome to attend from 7.00pm, however at 8.00pm we will be asking for the Year 3 and younger, to be taken home.

Years 0-3 7.00pm – 8.00pm

Years 4-6 7.00pm – 8.30pm

Parents of younger children are encouraged to stay, and younger siblings are welcome to attend if parents are staying.

The PTA will have on sale:

Ice Blocks $1.00 each

Small chips $0.50 each

Drinks $1.00 each

Glow Sticks $0.50 - $2.00 Variety of glowing merchandise

Tea & coffee is also be available for adults.
