6 October

Dear Parents

It seems hard to believe that tomorrow is the last day of term 3 and when we come back it will be the start of November.

A big thank you to all parents who have been able to assist with our school programme this term, in particular to all our sports coaches and managers. Your commitment has been much appreciated.

Next term starts on Tuesday 25th October and finishes on Wednesday 14th December at 12.30 pm.

It is very short because of the holiday changes due to the Rugby World Cup.

In week one next term we look forward to the Year 6 camp at Stewart Island.

We can also look forward to the All Blacks on their country wide tour, showing off the Webb Ellis Cup (I hope).

Welcome to Samuel Walsh who started school on Wednesday.

FIRST COMMUNION - SUNDAY 20 NOVEMBER 1.30PM

The children who have received the Sacrament of Confirmation will now begin preparation for First Holy Communion. Please bring your workbooks. The first session will be tomorrow morning – 9.30 till 10.30 in Room one. The subsequent sessions will be each Friday of the first four weeks next term.

There will be a parent / child meeting on the Wednesday of the first week of school (26 October) at 7pm in Room 5.

Parents of children who were in the last group (2009) to receive their First Holy Communion are asked to help to prepare and present the Communion breakfast in the hall on Sunday 20 November. Please fill in the reply form at the end of the newsletter. Thank you

Summer Uniform & Sunhats next term

A reminder that the children go into summer uniform next term and sunhats are compulsory.

Reports

Thank you to the parents who have volunteered to be part of a consultative group regarding our reporting format. I will be in contact next term via email to arrange a suitable first meeting time.

Convent Cup

We were fortunate to have a very successful day at Verdon College on Monday for the Convent Cup.

All our teams performed with credit, especially our Mini-ball team, who won the competition.

Thanks to all who helped with this.

Road Safety

I thank Constable Paul Frith for highlighting the speeding problems outside school in the paper last week. This has been an on-going issue. The traffic lights have been excellent in providing a safe crossing. Our next wish is to have flashing lights installed, such as those outside Boys High & Waihopai which can be put up to encourage people to slow down when passing the school.

Camp Fundraiser Fun Friday – 7th October

Back by popular demand, our famous Spiders, Sundaes, Baking, Lolly Kebabs & lots more.

Join us tomorrow after school for a fun filled Friday to end the term & to support the Yr 6 Camp Fund.

The JR McKenzie Trust is accepting applications from families of Year 6 children moving to Year 7 in 2012. The grant is for the purchase of funding school clothing and footwear as part of the uniform requirements at Year 7. All applications are confidential. Please ring me 0274918694 or email: principal@shsinv.school.nz for a copy.

Sports Teams

If your child is in a sports team and they are unable to attend can you please let the coach know or Mrs T-K by the lunch time they are suppose to play, so that other children are not let down by not being able to play due to lack of players. A huge thank you to the parents who have volunteered to coach a team, without your help the children wouldn't be able to play.

Below is a list of teams and coaches.

Achievements

Congratulations to Jake Meikle who was placed 2nd in the 8 – 11yrs 85cc and 4th in the 8 – 17 yrs 65cc Christchurch King of the Canterbury Motocross Champs last weekend.

Thanks to Motosouth for their continued support.

Congratulations to Emma Harrington who was placed 1st in her song & tap routine, and 1st in her duo (with Kayla Boniface) in the Dance Competitions recently. She was awarded a Highly Commended.

MISSING – If anyone knows the whereabouts of the Cook Island drum Mrs Tagomoa-Kaa was using for the Polyfest, would they please return it to the office. The name Winders is written on the bottom of it and it holds extreme sentimental value.

A reward is offered – No questions asked.

PTA

Special thanks to Nicki Brookland and Billie Bower for the fantastic job last Sunday in organising the fun filled family trial. It's great to have volunteers to help organise and run these events and from the comments I've had, it appears everyone enjoyed being out in the sunshine and had a great afternoon - of course the fact they were finished in time for the rugby was also a hit.

Thanks to everyone who participated, we hope you all enjoyed yourselves.

We'd also like to acknowledge and thank Paul Wallace from Countdown, for his continued support in our events and in particular his donations towards the Disco last week. Whenever possible it would be great if our families can reciprocate his continual support and shop with his friendly team at Countdown on Tay St.

1st Prize - Dan Carters Groin (The Belesky Family)

2nd Prize - B's + 1 - (The Brown Family)

3rd Prize - Kids in Charge (The Boniface Family)

Best Mug Shot - William Clapperton - (Go like the Clappers)

Best Team Name - Kids in Charge

We hope you have a safe and enjoyable holiday and look forward to the last term.

Class Happenings – Room 8

Wow this term has gone so fast. This term we have been learning about why people preserve food. Take a look at some of the photos of our venn diagrams that we did about freezing and drying types of food. We also tested what would happen to some food if it was left out over the term. Most of our hypotheses were correct, BUT we did find out that keeping them in a plastic bag actually kept them nicer for longer.

This week we have been working with Room 3 on our end of the year calendars. Tomorrow we will be putting the finishing touches to them using comic life. Keep an eye out for them next term.

FIRST COMMUNION HELPERS

I will help to prepare and present the Communion breakfast in the hall on Sunday 20 November.
