9 September

Dear Parents

World Cup fever has finally hit school. Each class has “adopted” one of the lower ranked teams and we are looking forward to the competition beginning tomorrow. Thanks to Miss Gaines for decorating the school foyer.

It has been a busy week with the chess tournament on Monday, Room 5 & 6’s visit to the Re-cycling Centre yesterday and our Ski trip tomorrow.

Our Confirmation group are also close to completion and there is a reminder about Reconciliation for all these children next Tuesday at 7 pm.

A big thank you to the parents who have been coaching our winter sports teams – Netball, Hockey and Table Tennis. Without you, the children would have been unable to participate and your input has been greatly appreciated.

We hope everyone enjoys the Ski trip tomorrow and that the weather is fine.

CONFIRMATION NOTICE

In preparation for receiving the SACRAMENT OF CONFIRMATION, there will be RECONCILIATION FOR THE CHILDREN AND PARENTS on Tuesday 13 September at 7pm in the church. After Reconciliation, there will be a meeting to explain any organizational aspect of the Mass for Confirmation. The children and one parent will need to attend this evening. Other family members are also welcome to attend. The evening will take approximately one hour.

Thank you ~ Mary O’Neill

Reporting Discussion Group

One of the many discussions we had with the ERO team was in relation to our reporting system.

At present we have 2 reports, 1 interview (and use graphs and student goal sheets to show progress and next steps). We have been reporting against tools such as running records, PAT’s and e-asTTle tests, rather than specifically against national standards. I wish to meet with a group of parents to discuss this and possible changes to our reports.

Please contact me @ principal@shsinv.school.nz if you are interested.

Convent Cup

The Convent Cup will be held at Verdon College on Monday 3rd October for Yr 5 & 6 children.

We have 3 mini-ball, 2 soccer and 2 netball teams. Please contact me or Mrs Lieshout if you are able to help manage one of our teams.

Table Tennis

Southland Primary School Competition Runners up - Harry McLean & Damian Mitchell.

Thursday’s competition brought another grand final between Harry & Damian and the Myross Bush team. A great game to watch, with a result of 3 – 2 to Myross Bush. Harry & Damian showed great stamina and sportsmanship in their defeat.

This term brings to an end, the commitment the boys have had as a team, bringing fantastic results.

We wait in anticipation to the final of all finals at the end of this term - Trish Mitchell.

MISSING – If anyone knows the whereabouts of the Cook Island drum Mrs Tagomoa-Kaa was using for the Polyfest, would they please return it to the office. The name Winders is written on the bottom of it and it holds extreme sentimental value.

A reward is offered – No questions asked.

If anyone has any spare of the above, these would be appreciated. Thank you.

Makarewa Aquatics is a swim school that specializes in low teacher pupil ratio – for those children who have not yet mastered swimming, our classes have one teacher for every two pupils – these classes are for 15 minutes – short and concentrated with great results. For those children who can already swim but need some work on their stroke or breathing technique we have 30 minute classes with teacher pupil ratio of one teacher to four to six children.

If there is more than one child in the family we can usually accommodate them, so that all children swim at the same time, meaning that by spending just 30 minutes a week at the pool you can have all your children learn to swim. We take children of all ages and abilities, special needs children are more than welcome. I just ask that you please advise on enrolment of any disabilities so that we know in advance and are prepared to be able to cater for everyone according to their requirements.

We operate from Makarewa Community Pool which is located on Lorneville/Winton Highway next to Makarewa School, the pool is indoors and heated. Enquries to (03) 2140456 or via email MakarewaAquatics@xtra.co.nz

Class Happenings – Room 3

This term our focus for literacy has been the following and writing of instructions. Yesterday Mrs T-K gave our class a set of instructions to visualize and draw a creature called a Nogard. Miss Swney read the following instructions and we drew the individual parts.

What is a Nogard?

The Nogard is an animal. It has an oval-shaped body. It has a long neck and tail. The top of the neck, back and tail are covered with a row of triangular-shaped plates. The Nogard’s head is shaped like a long triangle. It has big eyes and eyebrows that stick out. It also has big nostrils. Its body is covered with scales. The Nogard has four short legs. At the end of each leg is a foot with five toes. Each toe has a sharp claw at the end. The Nogard has two wings attached to its body. These are located behind the front legs towards the top of its back. Nogards are usually green but change to a deep purple during the winter months.

We noticed that everyone’s interpretation of the instructions was different. You can see our ‘Nogards’ if you stand outside our classroom and look at the windows.

GO THE ALL BLACKS!!!
