Targets
Each year we set targets in relation to areas of the New Zealand Curriculum. With the implementation of the Government’s National Standards there is an emphasis on literacy and numeracy targets.

The targets for 2011 in numeracy are:
➢ To analyse the results from the numeracy initiative that has been in place for Year 3 – 5 children.
➢ From this, identify strengths and weaknesses in our own school delivery programme and use the numeracy facilitators as models of best practice where necessary.

The literacy target is:
➢ Introduce the First Steps pre-school and entry programme (run by Helen Campbell). This involves teacher & teacher aide training.
At present there is some variance with year 1 reading results at their 6 year check and this programme has had success in other schools in decreasing this variance.

Newsletters
Newsletters will now be sent out on a Thursday. Please ensure your child brings it home so you can keep up to date with what is happening at school.

Parent Help – Maths
As in previous years, we are looking for parent help to assist groups of children in numeracy knowledge (e.g. basic facts) in Term 2. This would involve playing maths games and counting with small groups of children. If you are interested, please see Miss Swney.

Room 7 Bike Programme
As part of the Kiwi sport initiative, some of our Year 4 children will have the opportunity to take part in a bike safety programme. This starts Thursday 19th May 1.15 pm.
Those children who have been chosen are asked to bring their bikes and helmets please.

Hockey
After some initial hassles getting teams organised, we have entered a team in the Y 3 & 4 competition to be played on Wednesday.

Achievements
Aubrey Page received the ‘Player of the Day’ trophy from the Thistle AFC Juniors Soccer Club on Monday.

Please let Christine know of any achievements with your children so they can be recognised in our newsletter.

Lost ~ Light blue jersey size 10 with the name: Briana Henson.

PTA ~ Oyster Raffle
Please find a raffle ticket for our Sacred Heart Oyster raffle with your newsletter today. Tickets and money are to be returned to the school office by Friday 27th May. Extra tickets are available.
Profits from this fundraiser will enable us to build gardens for our new verandas, and also provide safety vests for children who walk, bike or bus to school. Your support with this will benefit your children.
The family who sells the most cards will receive a donated voucher from Café Greenworld, and the class who sells the most, will receive a special treat.
Many thanks ~ Your PTA

Class Happenings ~ Room 6 Holiday Writing

In the holidays it was Shaun’s birthday. I brought my scooter. We went for a treasure hunt on my scooter. There was a tool box full of lollies. I was happy and it was fun.
Some people brought their rip stick. I got two drinks and lots of lollies.

In the holidays I had a party. I invited Ethan, Will, Jakobe, Ben and Josh. We went to Anderson’s park. We played for about 20 minutes. We played on the spinner.
It went really fast.
Shaun Clapperton

I went on the bumpy slide. It was a water slide. It was pink. When you’re at the bottom, water splashes at your face. It was fun. I went on it again but I came third.
I looked at the times when I got to the bottom.

On the aeroplane there were three children. We got on the plane fast and the adults did not get on the plane fast. We got to have three lollies and four cupcakes.
Bridie, Holly who is five now and I got to see the pilot steering the aeroplane.

In the holidays, Lily, Mum and I went to Nana and Grandad’s. In the morning we got our Easter eggs. Next we went to the river. We got our Easter eggs on Sunday. We got them from Mum and Dad. The Easter egg was big. We took the dog. I felt happy.

In the holidays I went to Wallacetown and had a sleep over. It was really windy and sunny when we went on the tramp and did flips. We had some ice cream and Katelyn’s shoes had some diamonds on them. I felt happy with Katelyn and Katelyn smelt like strawberries. Katelyn and I played with the dress ups and I was the witch and Katelyn was the princess. We played with the toys. We watched some movies. We watched “Megamind” and “Despicable Me”. We played with the cat too. We went to the shop and got tea.

The junior school had a visit from the Fire Service on Tuesday as an introduction to the ‘Get Fire Wise Programme’. The children got to see a fireman dressed in his safety gear so they would not be scared if they had to rescue us at our house.
