Dear Parents

Welcome back to Term 2 at Sacred Heart. A warm welcome to all our new families.

This term we welcome Matt Murray, a student from the Southland Campus, who will be working in room 2. Also Kyron Devery & Holly Wolf who both joined the children in Room 2.
We hope they enjoy their time with us.

The children attended ‘The Jack & the Beanstalk’ show yesterday being run by SIT students.
This was a great lead in to the term, as we are introducing our own school production to be presented at the end of this term.

This term we also begin our winter sports, with hockey, table tennis and netball. Another form has been included with this newsletter, so please get it filled in and back to school asap.
The Zone & Southland Cross Country will also be held this term.

Our prayers are with the O’Connor & Hackett families.

Bike Safety & Safety Vest
As part of the Kiwi sport initiative, some of our Year 4 children will have the opportunity to take part in a bike safety programme. More info will be supplied later.
We have plans, with the PTA’s assistance to supply safety vests for all children who bus, walk or bike to school.

Maths at Home
A useful website to support your child/ren with maths is www.nzmaths.co.nz. Click on the jigsaw that says Families. This explains what the Numeracy Project is. There is a section on activities to do at home that is useful as it provides some ideas of what you can be doing to strengthen your child’s knowledge. If you are unsure of the domain or stage your child is at, please do not hesitate to ask their class teacher.

Parent Help – Maths
As in previous years, we are looking for parent help to assist groups of children in numeracy knowledge (e.g. basic facts) in Term 2. This would involve playing maths games and counting with small groups of children. If you are interested, please see Miss Swney.
Canteen Notice
The Canteen will be closed for the rest of the month. It will re-open 3rd June.
We wish Kelly & Gillian an enjoyable holiday in Australia.

Winter Uniform
It is great to see the children wearing the correct uniform for winter.
A reminder please that sports shoes are to be worn with sports uniform only. Please check the information below for the correct coloured socks.
The children are encouraged by their class teacher and house points, when wearing the correct uniform, so your support with this is appreciated.
2nd hand uniform is available by contacting: Amanda 2157663.
Sports Uniform is available at the office: Trackpants/Polo Tops @ $25, Shorts @ $20

Girls: Pinnafore, white long sleeved button to neck blouse or white skivvy, red tie (optional), blue v neck jersey, navy blue or white socks, navy blue tights, tan, brown, navy or black shoes.

Boys: Winter weight grey shorts, long sleeved button to neck grey shirt, red tie (optional), blue v neck jersey, grey knee high socks, tan, brown, navy or black shoes.

Aerobics Festival – Due to lack of entries, we will not be entering a team this year.

Hockey - Wednesdays
We have entered 2 teams – a Year 1/2 team and a Year 3/6 team. At present we urgently need more players in both teams. If your child is interested, please contact Mrs T.K. or myself.

Scholastic Bookclub - Issue 3 will close Friday 13 May.

(Front entrance driveway.) Come along for an informative evening for parents and caregivers.
Michelle McCuin will speak about the Gateway Programme at Verdon College.
Michelle Boivin from Careers Services will speak on ‘general career trends’ and how parents can help prepare children for their career futures.
The new DVD ‘NCEA in simple language’ will be presented.

ROOM 5 CLASS HAPPENINGS

We have an action packed term ahead of us with the highlight being the production happening in week 10. Room 5 are going to be the builders, so if anybody has hard hats and tool belts that we could use, please let me know.
Yesterday we all went to the Invercargill Working Men’s Club to watch ‘Jack and the Beanstalk’. We have used this as our ‘Tuning In’ for our inquiry of ‘what makes a great production’. We all walked out thinking that it was an amazing show and cannot wait to start practising for our own production >>>>>>
Also this term we will be learning about ‘Fire Wise’, next week we have our introductory lesson with the fire truck visit on Tuesday.
For PE this term we are focusing on ‘What makes a game?’, this is a great follow on from our focus last term about making good choices. We will be concentrating on turn taking, sharing equipment and following rules.
With the library now finished, our library day will be on Fridays; this will mean that the children have got a poem and the books from the library for their weekend reading.
Now that the winter months are here, please ensure that your child is in full correct winter uniform and that they have a jersey and jacket with them each day.
The children’s wish for this term is to have a bike day. I will confirm all the details once the marble jar is full.
