20 September
Dear Parents
The Ski Trip again this year proved to be very successful. The
weather held until the end of the day. The snow conditions were perfect. Many
experienced their first time skiing. Some of these first timers even made it
onto the chairlifts and down the slopes. A big thank you to the parents
who helped make the day such a success.

*REFLECTION ON TODAY’S GOSPEL READING (From Lectio Divina)
On today’s reading Jesus repeats the teaching
to his disciples about his death and resurrection that we read about last week
(Mark 8:31-33). It was so important that Jesus made sure they were alone and
wouldn’t be interrupted. Mark reveals the disciples were puzzled and afraid to
ask Jesus about the subject. Perhaps they were afraid they might get a similar
rebuke to Peter if they said the wrong thing (Mark 8:33) so decided to keep quiet.
Or maybe they just couldn’t handle the implications of what Jesus was saying.
The disciples’ discussion about who is the greatest
may have been prompted by wondering who would be their leader if Jesus died. Of
course Jesus picked this up straight away. The disciples were too ashamed to
confess what they had discussed. Jesus doesn’t wait for them to explain. He
simply shows them. But not in a way they would have expected.
Importance within Jesus’ community is achieved through
service to others not by imposing power. At that time children had no power and
little value. But in Jesus’ view whoever welcomed a ‘valueless’ person welcomed
him and the Father who sent him. Jesus’ view of life and the world’s way can
never mix: they are like oil and water.
The disciples’ views had to be shaken up to adopt
Jesus’ teaching. Jesus and his Father will be encountered in and through the
people society rejects. If the disciples do not change they will still be
thinking like the world and not like God. Once again Jesus is saying ‘my way is
not and never will be the world’s way’.
MEDITATION: Were the disciples right to be afraid of
asking Jesus to explain his teaching? Do you feel able to ask Jesus about
things you don’t understand? Consider the importance Jesus places in our
attitudes to serving others. How do you make this a practical part of your
life?
PRAYER: Prayerfully read through Psalm 54. Can you
join the psalmist in expressing your reliance on God? Throughout this week
repeat verse 4 ‘But God is my helper. The Lord is my defender’. To which
specific situations in your life can these truths be applied?
Uniform
Now
that Spring is here it is a good time for us to be thinking about next term and
the change to summer uniform. Included below is the list of uniform items. In particular, we would like to draw your
attention to the shoes and hair ties. All students should keep their hair tidy
and tied up if it is long. This is for
health and safety reasons as well as tidiness.
Jewellery is not part of our uniform and therefore should not be worn at
school.
If
students are wearing sports uniform they are able to wear sports shoes. However, these should not be worn with our
basic school uniform.
As
always, if there is a reason why your child cannot wear correct school uniform,
please contact the class teacher.
We
look forward to seeing all our children in correct school uniform at all times.
Many
thanks for your support with this.

Update
Grocery
Items (17th – 28th September) –
Thanks to all the families who have already brought in their bottles and
grocery items. These last two weeks of term we are looking for donations of
non-perishable items for our grocery hamper(s).
Again
we only ask for one grocery item per family during this time and we have left
the bin for bottles out for anyone who would still like to add any bottle
donations. We have also received some hair product and we are happy to get this
anytime.
In
the coming weeks families will receive a call from the fair committee
representative from your children’s class, asking you to help and join your
child’s class roster to man the stall this class is responsible for. Please
remember many volunteers make this a great day and in most instances we will
only be looking for up to an hour of your time on the day. If you have an issue
with being contacted then please advise the school office so you can be removed
from the contact list.
Do
you have ice cream containers with lids that fit? If so please save these for
us to get next term or pop them in one of the bins by the office if you need to
get rid of them now.
Kids
start saving your coins for the fair day – we always end up with lots of notes
at the start of the day so parents encourage your kids to save their coins to
use on the day.

Room 3 Class Happenings
As
a finale to our recent Inquiry unit, we had a celebration of the different
cultures of children and teachers that make up our school community. The
children took part in a range of art and music activities. A performance by some Aurora College
students, which included traditional Cook Island drum playing and dancing, was
enjoyed after our 'cultural' shared lunch. Below are some stories that
the children have written.
I
ate cake at the Culture Day and it was yum.
I did art and it was fun. The name of the art was tapa cloths. To make a tapa cloth we had to draw on a
piece of paper and then we had to crush the piece of paper. We put feathers and grass on it. Alex
Culture Day was fun and I liked the house
teams. The food was yummy and we ate it
in the hall. Conna
On Culture Day I went to Room 6 to make a paper
plane and a jumping frog. It didn’t go
so well. After that we all went to the
hall and ate lunch. We all went to play
for a little bit. I liked the people of
Aurora College and how they kept the beat on the drums. The girl kept the beat too when she was
dancing. Jade
On
Culture Day I liked when we had the shared lunch with the sweet things. I also liked when we got into our house teams
and went around doing different activities. My favourite activity was the gecko
painting because we got to put dots around the outside of the gecko. Robbie
