Sacred Heart School Newsletters

22 October

Dear Parents

A big thanks to the PTA for running such a successful disco last night. The children had a great time, it was much appreciated.
The countdown is on to the School Fair on Sunday 7th November. Each class this year is responsible for individual activities or stalls and I ask that you avail of your time if asked.

Activity Fees
At present we have 22 families with outstanding activity fees, sports fees or uniform costs. These equate to $2745 and the school is not in a position to cover these debts. Please arrange payment as soon as possible.
At present some parents use the purchase now, pay later method which usually works. But with an increasing number of unsettled accounts, this option may no longer be available. A large number of parents use the drip feed, direct credit option, which is a win win situation for both parties. Please see Christine for any further details.

Welcome to Braedyn Francis who joined the children in Room 1 on Monday.

Phone Outage
Our apologies for anyone trying to contact the school this morning. The contractors laying pipes for the new building accidentally cut the phone lines.

Numeracy Support
We are looking for parents to help one afternoon a week with maths support. The sessions will incorporate some counting and playing of games with groups of four children. If you are interested, please Miss Swney.

Congratulations:
MX Competitions - To Jake Meikle who returned this week after taking home the titles “King of the Canterbury” in Christchurch, and the “South Island Champs” in Reefton, in his age group class for MX. Jake would like to thank all the mum’s who sacrificed their waist measurements in support of his chocolate sales.

Mitre 10 Takahe Art Competition - To Abby Humm & Caitlin Smith, whose art work has been chosen for national judging in the above competition. Both their art work will be on display at the New Dowse Art Gallery in Wellington next month.

Gymnastics - To Patrice Brookland who won a gold medal in Level 3C Women’s Gymnastics & a Silver medal for the individual bar apparatus for overall Level 3. Patrice's team also came first in the Southern Gym Competition which was held in Balclutha last weekend.

Shooters lost 14 – 30
Sharks won 20 – 4
Slamdunkers lost 2 – 20

Now is the time to get the word out that Sacred Heart School is having a Fair on Sunday 7th November 2010. We have included with this week’s newsletter for each family, a couple of our bright posters/flyers advertising the fair. We would love it if you could arrange to put these up in your workplaces, local shopping centres, fish & chip shops etc – anywhere that they may be viewed by people who may like to come to the fair. Extras will be available from the office should you have a need for anymore. Special thanks to Juliette Clapperton for producing these for us. Also watch out for a photo and info about the fair in the Express – they have been into school and we hope to see this in next week’s issue.

Some of you may have already had a call from a volunteer parent within your class, and others will be contacted over the next two weeks. We are asking parents to help where you can and join your child’s class roster to man the stall they are responsible for. Or in some cases help us to man other stalls where greater numbers of volunteers may be required.

As advertised last week we need scones for our Devonshire Tea stall. To help keep our costs to a minimum, we ask our parent community to help in making these scones. Below we have published the recipe and ask any parents, who are able, to make a batch now, freeze them and bring on the day of the fair. Alternatively make fresh on the day.
We would really appreciate your help with these:
Scone Recipe (can be doubled)
2 cups self raising flour
Half cup lemonade
Half cup cream
Bake at 200 degrees for approx 10 mins.
Please freeze and bring the morning of the school fair.

Thanks to those families who have already left a bottle at the office.
Please remember we are asking for each family to donate a bottle for our mystery bottle auction on the chocolate wheel – this can be any sealed bottle e.g. wine, sauce, cleaner ??? Each bottle is wrapped and the fun is bidding or taking tickets on something unknown! Please leave at the office asap.

Please keep stashing items for the White Elephant stall.
Items can now be left at the office for those families unable to deliver them on the Saturday prior to the fair. We have plenty of storage space available so items large or small are accepted.
If you want Trish to pick up any items, please contact her on 215-8292.

Also gardeners, if there are veggies spare in the garden (or in Grandad’s) please bring these on the day for the chocolate wheel – these are always a hit.

Room 2 Class Happenings

We have been learning about how to make our stories a lot more interesting. One way that we can do this is to use different beginnings to our sentences. We have been practising and are starting to get quite good at our varied sentence beginnings.
